BANGALORE: Vietnam defeated Malaysia 2-1 to win the battle of South-East Asian teams in the AFC Youth Championship here at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Monday.
An early own goal by Malaysia’s Baddrol Bakhtiar in the 11th minute left them chasing for the equaliser for the next 45 minutes before Mohd Khyril Muhymeen Zambri restored parity in first half added time. Tinh Quang Nguyen fired the winner in the 63rd minute and Vietnam took early control of Group D with three points.
The match failed to rise anywhere near the heights of the earlier encounter, a thrilling Arab derby between Saudi Arabia and Iraq, and was centred mostly in midfield as the ASEAN teams jostled for control.
Bakhtiar gave stand-in Malaysian goalkeeper Abdul Hadi Abdul Hamid a horror start after heading in an innocuous-looking cross from Vietnam’s Tinh Quang Nguyen.
Vietnam however failed to capitalise on this unexpected gift and allowed their rivals to slowly but surely gain the upper hand and come into the match.
Malaysia composed themselves and within 10 minutes had stitched together a few good moves which injected a measure of confidence into them though the game continued to be of middling quality.
Half a dozen corners were conceded by under-pressure Vietnam as Malaysia mounted a fightback but none of these could be converted into goals, pointing to the lack of quality finishing upfront.
K Rajagopal’s team eventually equalised and went out for the breather on level terms when Zambri got his head to a searing 40-yard cross-cum-shot from Safiq Rahim to beat Vietnam goalkeeper Binh Thanh Nguyen in first half injury time.
The restart saw listless moves dominating the proceedings again and it looked like both teams would be more than happy to keep a point. Zambri had a half-chance to cement Malaysia’s position in the 55th minute but his header missed the net by inches.
This miss proved to be costly as Vietnam scored at the other end eight minutes later. Tinh Quang Nguyen, the man whose cross led to the first goal, dispatched a shot across the goalmouth which took a touch of Abdulhadi as the custodian flung himself to his right in vain.
Vietnam were unlucky not to enhance the victory margin after a screaming grounder from Luong Pham Thanh missed the right upright by centimeters in the 70th minute and, 10 minutes later as the match entered the home stretch, Tinh Quang Nguyen conjured a moment of pure magic, weaving his way past three defenders before firing inches wide.
Malaysian coach Rajagopal resorted to a raft of substitutions in the dying minutes but it failed to pay dividends as wayward shooting pegged the team back. Rahim’s header in the last minute of injury time thudded against the crossbar and the snap-header by Farderin Kadir hit the top-netting, epitomising Malaysia's finishing woes.
“I am completely disappointed with the result,” said Malaysian coach Rajagopal. “I was confident of a good result before the game and we did get back into it in the last quarter.”
“The second goal we conceded was sloppy. We need a result against Saudi but after their draw today they will be gunning for all three points,” said Rajagopal, fearing a Saudi backlash.
Vietnam coach Long Le Tuan said he could not have asked for more. “We got what we wanted. Malaysia are tough opponents and know our game well. The stage is set: It is estimated that between seven and eight million people are expected to attend the official Fan Fests in the twelve World Cup Host Cities – twice as many as in the stadiums.
Following a working group meeting with the Host Cities in Frankfurt, Organising Committee (OC) Senior Vice-President Horst R. Schmidt announced: ”The ticketing problem has been discussed often enough, so we are very happy that we have secured an agreement with the 12 World Cup Host Cities and FIFA to have live broadcasts on giant screens. Fans will be able to share the World Cup experience locally, even if they have not been able to obtain match tickets.

Free entry for all

The live screening of 56 World Cup matches by the ARD,ZDF and RTL TV broadcasting companies has been agreed (8 games are to be played concurrently). Additionally the broadcasts will also include an attractive entertainment and music programme. Many of the live TV and radio broadcasts will come from the central Public Viewing sites in the twelve Host Cities, particularly on days where there are no matches. Fans will not be charged to watch the live match broadcasts and temporary OC 'fan embassies' will be erected to cater specifically for visitors from abroad.

FIFA Official Partners Coca Cola, Hyundai, MasterCard and Toshiba will be involved in all twelve cities, funding basic infrastructure for each Host city. In Berlin Phillips will also be involved. According to Horst R. Schmidt, “The cities, rather than the OC or FIFA, are responsible for organising the events. Particular attention must be paid to ensuring the same level of security is achieved as in the stadiums.”

Fifa: A very good solution for everyone

The cities can recover their costs by charging for vending sites or through sponsorship deals with local and regional businesses, provided they do not compete with Official Sponsors. Local and regional breweries will therefore be in a position to sell their beer alongside Anheuser Busch. There will also be a wide range of international and local gastronomic specialties on offer.

“We are delighted that the cities, working closely with the OC and FIFA, have been able to set up these events for fans and visitors, which is a first for the World Cup in this form. This also means that every city will have two venues: the stadium and the Fan Fest. We have been able to come up with some excellent solutions, particularly in the marketing sphere”. commented FIFA General Secretary Urs Linsi.

Parties in another 800 towns and cities

Along with the official Fan Fests in the twelve World Cup Host Cities there will be live broadcasts on giant screens all over Germany. More than 800 towns and cities have registered non-commercial events with the rights holder Infront Sports & Media AG. Infront has also concluded an umbrella agreement with the licensed trade association DEHOGA to allow World Cup games to be screened free of charge in their pubs and beer gardens.There are no restrictions on these events, specifically where food and drink is concerned, as long as there are no entrance fees or the event is sponsored. Licenses are only required for commercial events and twenty applications have been registered to date. Infront will donate all income from these commercial licenses to the SOS Children's Villages foundation for the Official Charity Campaign of the 2006 Fifa World Cup, '6 villages for 2006'.

"We had to amalgamate a whole series of concepts in this design," company director Tom Fattorini explained. "The principal concepts we wanted the trophy to evoke are: youth, dynamism and skill together with other aspects related to the sponsors, Gillette. Getting the correct balance proved to be extremely difficult, but I think we have succeeded in creating an award that will stand the test of time."

Oil prices hovered around 71 dollars a barrel in Asian trade after hitting record highs overnight on rising fears of a US military strike against Iran over its nuclear program and tighter US gasoline supplies, dealers said.

At 2:25 pm (0625 GMT), New York's main contract of light sweet crude for May delivery, was down 46 cents at 70.89 dollars a barrel from a record settlement price of 71.35 dollars in US trading Tuesday.

Dealers said the dip was part of a short-term correction after the contract hit a peak in intraday New York trade of 71.60 dollars.

"This market is ready to blow," said Tony Nunan, an energy risk manager with Mitsubishi Corp's international petroleum business in Tokyo.
"It's still way above 70 dollars. Gasoline and geo-political risks are driving the market and they both don't have easy solutions.

"There is so much uncertainty with Iran and the real problem for the market is that Iran's real main weapon is oil and when push comes to shove they will do something about it," Nunan said.
